The results of this research, presented at the recent congress of the American College of Cardiology, held recently in New Orleans (USA), confirm the findings of a previous study conducted in 2007 with a group of Mormons, whose religion includes fasting for 24 hours on the first Sunday of each month. On that occasion, it was observed that these people had a 39 percent lower risk of coronary heart disease, one of the leading causes of death for both men and women, compared with those who did not fast. The same team of researchers has now confirmed these results and also observed that fasting also reduces several cardiovascular risk factors, as the level of triglycerides, body weight and glucose levels in the blood.
PROCESS The study involved more than 200 individuals, both patients and healthy volunteers Intermountain Center. Some of them had to be fasting for 24 hours, although they could drink water, and then eat a normal diet for 24 hours. Throughout the process, the researchers performed a carefully monitored, including blood tests and physical measurements to assess cardiac risk factors, metabolic risk markers and other parameters of general health. The results showed that during the fasting period, there were various reactions in biological mechanisms of the body, rising levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) and good (HDL), 14 and 6 percent respectively, and total cholesterol levels.
